PLACE2BE: PARENTING SMART

Our Family Help Offer

Supporting children and families at Burlish Park

At Burlish Park Primary School, we know that family life can sometimes be challenging. There may be times when your child, or your family, needs a little extra help, advice or someone to talk to.

You don't have to wait for a problem to become a big problem.

Family Help means offering support as soon as a need is identified, helping children and families before difficulties become more complicated. At Burlish Park, we want you to feel comfortable talking to us. There is no judgement, and you don't need to have all the answers before asking for help.

If you have a worry or concern, please speak to your child's class teacher, a member of our Pastoral Team, our SENCO or a member of our Safeguarding Team. If you're unsure who to speak to, contact the school office and we will help you find the right person.

How can we help?

We can support children and families with a range of needs, including:

  • Emotional wellbeing, anxiety and worries
  • Friendships and relationships
  • Behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Attendance and difficulties coming into school
  • Routines, boundaries and family life
  • Sleep and other everyday challenges
  • SEND, speech, language and communication
  • Confidence, self-esteem and resilience
  • Online safety and use of technology
  • Bereavement and significant changes in family life
  • Healthy lifestyles and physical wellbeing
  • Financial, housing or other practical difficulties
  • Caring responsibilities
  • Concerns about a child's safety or wellbeing

Sometimes, the most helpful thing we can do is listen, help you make sense of what is happening and work with you to decide what might help.

Support available in school

Our support is tailored to each child and family. This might include:

A trusted adult
Every child should have an adult in school they feel comfortable talking to. We build positive relationships with children and take their worries seriously.

Pastoral and wellbeing support
Our Nurture Team can provide individual or small-group support, help children manage worries and emotions, support friendships and relationships, and provide nurture activities and time with a trusted adult.

Positive behaviour support
We understand that behaviour can be a form of communication. We work with children and families to understand what may be behind a difficulty and help children develop the skills they need to manage their emotions and behaviour positively.

Attendance support
If attendance becomes a concern, we will work with you early to understand what may be making school difficult and identify practical ways to help your child develop positive and successful routines.

SEND and communication support
Our SENCo works closely with children, families and staff to identify and respond to additional needs. We use inclusive approaches across school and, where appropriate, work with external professionals to make sure children receive the right support.

Working with parents and carers

You know your child best, and we value working with you.

We can:

  • Listen to your concerns
  • Help you understand what might be contributing to a difficulty
  • Share practical ideas and strategies
  • Work with you to agree next steps
  • Signpost you to appropriate services
  • Coordinate support with other professionals when needed

Sometimes a conversation with school is all that is needed. At other times, we may work with you and other professionals through Worcestershire's Early Help processes, including an Early Help Assessment and Team Around the Family approach.

Who can I talk to?

Your child's class teacher – often the best first person to speak to about a worry or concern.

Our Pastoral Team – support with wellbeing, behaviour, attendance and wider family needs.

Our SENCO – support with additional needs, learning, communication and SEND.

Our Safeguarding Team – support where there are concerns about a child's safety or welfare.

Not sure who to speak to? Contact the school office and we will help you find the right person.

Working with other services

We know that schools cannot provide every type of support a family may need. With your involvement, we may work alongside services such as Worcestershire Early Help and Family Support, Family Hubs, school nursing, speech and language services, SEND services, mental health and wellbeing services, parenting support, housing and financial advice services, and local voluntary organisations.

You can find further information through Worcestershire Family Hubs and Worcestershire Early Help.

If you are worried about a child's safety

If you are worried that a child is being harmed, neglected or is at risk of significant harm, please speak to a member of our safeguarding team.

If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

Worcestershire's Family Front Door is the central point for reporting concerns about the safety or wellbeing of children and young people:

You are not alone

Asking for help is a strength.

At Burlish Park, we want every child to feel safe, valued and able to thrive, and we want families to know that they can talk to us when things are difficult.

Please come and talk to us. We will listen, help where we can and work with you to find the right support.
